Getting to Know…Nicole Fallert

HOLD ON! I know the month of introductions is ending, but I'm still here!
Ok..
My name is: Nicole Fallert
Grade: Senior
You Can Find Me in the High School: on the Morning Announcements, speed-walking, or writing and working with my incredible Tapestry staffers.

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
I am Tapestry's Open Mic Coordinator, as well as a Manuscript Tutor! Come to me with Tapestry event ideas or for writing help!

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I danced to jazz with my sisters at 11:00pm in the streets of New Orleans. Yes it's really true-they play music in the streets all day.

3. Best fall meal?
Funny this is a question. I was distracting myself in school today thinking of this very topic. If I had to choose-it would be anything with spices. The flavor of pumpkin is always a favorite of mine, and I think one of the reasons we all love fall so much is that we can actually recall it by its taste. Autumn is all about the flavors, both of its colors and its food. Make sure to take some time and cook something spicy, tangy, or just altogether new! Here's a great recipe I know I'll surely try. Be Adventurous!

4. What is your favorite fall activity?
Activity. That is the definition of my fall. Between sports practices, choir rehearsals, and homework, I hardly catch a moment to use for fun. Note to Readers: This is not the way to enjoy your fall. I have never got apple picking, and so I am going to make that a goal fall activity.

5. Favorite writing utensil?
An ink pen. It practically writes for itself. And music.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. If you have not already borrowed my copy (I have lent it to many people-it's currently out right now..sorry!) you are welcome to ask for it anytime. I bought this book at the Harvard Book Store when visiting Harvard University this past summer and read it on one of the university's lawns on what you can imagine to be the perfect July afternoon. I think all high schoolers should read this book, whose humble storytelling places characters into a conversation about race, family, relationships, education, and our very global world. Once you finish, listen to this

7. The song that's in your head right now?
Also another impossible question. I usually have multiple songs in my head. If my current career path fails, I plan on becoming a celebrity DJ.
Pop Song: "Shake it Off" by Taylor Swift. Indie Song: "Ms" by alt-J Rap Song: "i" by Kendrick Lamar Classic Song: "Check On It" by Beyonce.

8. Favorite movie/genre?
I can recite all of Finding Nemo if that's a thing.

9. Favorite type of cookie?
A melting, gooey, drop down and kiss the Earth "thank you God" kind of cookie

10. Favorite season and why?
Spring. Even as an underclassman, I loved that sort of excited aura all the older kids started to have as they neared graduation or the end of the year. I am excited by Spring's change-nothing is ever the same after the spring. The winter turns, and you cannot go back. The school year ends, and you cannot go back and change your answers, say that one apology, or realize what you should have done. It's a time of thanksgiving for the hurried year you've just completed, but also a time to carpe diem and lay in the sun, thanking the Earth for loving you with its flowers.

Get to Know David

Hello!  I'm a sophomore, so this is my first post on this blog!

1.) What position are you in the Tapestry QRT?
I am in charge of contacting artists and writers and organizing events related to guest speakers, and am a manuscript tutor.

2.) Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I started a paper route- It was nice to walk around in the morning quiet, but I did meet some very eccentric people.

3.) Best fall meal?
Ramen or Udon noodles.

4.)What color is your favorite shirt?
I don't really have a favorite shirt.

5.) Favorite writing utensil?
A pencil that still has an eraser and unbroken lead.

6.) A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
The Species Seekers by Richard Conniff- interesting and entertaining, but dry at times.
I Am America and So Can You by Stephen Colbert- I am a proud member of the Colbert Nation.

7.) The song that's in your head right now?
The West Wing theme, The Clash London Calling album

8.) Favorite movie/genre?
That's hard to say.  I liked the Roosevelts by Ken Burns. That being said, I liked The Butler, True Grit, and Sherlock.

9.) Favorite type of cookie?
Chocolate Chip

10.) Favorite season:
Late summer/early fall.  New school year, crew season, and time to relax before I accumulate a huge work load.

From the Faculty Lounge: Mrs. Green

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
I am the one with the messiest desk.

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I took a group of 5 6-10 year olds (including my children) on a kayak to a pretty high rock and coached them to jump from it into the lake.

3. Best fall meal?
Sausage stuffed acorn squash. Salad with butternut squash. Pumpkin pie ice cream. I would probably not eat all at the same meal, though. That would be squash overload.

4. What is your favorite fall activity?
Hiking/ walking at Hartwood Acres with my kids and dog when the weather is perfect for shorts and a long sleeve shirt, and the leaves are just starting to change.

5. (Least) Favorite writing utensil? There is a trick pencil made of rubber that my family somehow acquired which has been in the junk drawer in our kitchen for months. I will try to write with it about once a week.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
I have a decent list. We have already discussed Americanah (See Sarah's post), so I will say Pocketful of Names by Joe Coomer. I read it in Maine, where it takes place, which possibly made me like it more. I also bought it from a tiny independent bookstore on recommendation and had the pleasure of passing the word on about it, instead of pulling it from the best seller list or from a Mega book store chain. That pleased me as well.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
I am currently listening to the rhythmic drone of the teacher copy machine. It is in my head.

8. Favorite movie/genre?
I love Downton Abbey, TED Talks, and can be caught watching The Biggest Loser (but the last one is a shameful secret).

9. Favorite type of cookie?
A free homemade cookie. Why do you think I invented Coffee House?

10. Favorite season and why?
Summer. Because I get to play stay-at-home-mom, swim in open waters, kayak, paddle, waterski, and take scenic jogs.
Fall. Because I get to reunite with the job I love, meet new students, be thoughtful about literature and writing, and eat pumpkin flavored stuff.
Winter. Because I get to ski, jog all bundled up, read by the fire, and stay in pj's on snow days.
Spring. Because I get to dig in the dirt, appreciate the longer days, celebrate lots of birthdays, dust off my bike, and reunite my arms and legs with fresh air.

All About Rachel!

Hello lovely readers!

As we are approaching the end of September, the month of introductions, I hope you have enjoyed getting to know your Tappy 2014-2015 Senior Staff.

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
Head of Communications! I get to work with my awesome apprentice and friend Kristen.

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I decided to conquer my fear of heights and go on a canopy zip-lining tour!

3. Best fall meal?
As the weather gets colder my favorite meal is a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. There is nothing like a little comfort food to help out with late night studying.

4. What is your favorite fall activity?
Although school can be stressful, I value the time I set aside for fun activities. A few of my fall favorites are apple picking and going to football games. Although the scores at our football games can be rather unpredictable, it is still fun to get dressed up and cheer on your friends in the student section!

5. Favorite writing utensil?
A pretty journal. It's important to have something nice to save your writing.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. If you know anyone who is perhaps a little socially awkward I would recommend reading this book. It talks about the importance of finding love and not being afraid to be yourself.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
Hakuna Matata....I was in the Senior Homecoming Skit and it was Lion King themed. But hey, especially with all the college apps due soon, it doesn't hurt to remember "it means no worries".

8. Favorite movie/genre?
I have found that a lot of my favorite movies happen to be made in the 80's (or early 90's). In case you haven't seen them make sure to check out: The Breakfast Club, Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Shawshank Redemption, The Dead Poets Society, Top Gun, and Pretty Woman.

9. Favorite type of cookie?
Homemade chocolate chip. Don't mess with a good thing.

10. Favorite season and why?
Summer. There is something magical that happens when the days get longer and the nights get hotter. Without the everyday pressures of school it allows students to focus on what they really love. And my birthday is in July.

Sweet potatoes and crisp apples make fall awesome. I also love salmon.

I was into calligraphy for a while. Now, it would probably be a trusty No. 2 pencil.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
“The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Alan Bradley.  Yes, I loved it, as well as the other books in the series. They are engaging, and the mysteries are not predictable, which makes for suspenseful reads.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
Hmm... for the past few days, I couldn't get songs out of my head, but now there are none! If I could choose, it would be “The Chain” by Ingrid Michaelson.

Getting to Know the Tapestry Staff: Zoe Aridor

Sorry for being so fashionably late on this post!

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
Manuscript Tutor.

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I went on a night hike by myself. Super creepy -- I definitely would not recommend unless strange, undefinable sounds in the middle night do not phase you.

3. Best fall meal?
Soup. Any soup.

4. What color is your favorite shirt?
Crimson.

5. Favorite writing utensil?
My trusty Ticonderoga Tri-writes.  I'm pretty sure they were made for second graders, but who cares, right?

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
This is probably the strangest book I have ever read, but it's eccentricity was mesmerizing.  It's definitely a very cool read for those who enjoy stories that are weird/outside the box.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
I'm sorry that I'm going all classical on you guys, but Schubert's Piano Trio in E flat Major (second movement) hasn't left my brain for days.

8. Favorite artist/song?
At the moment, this is the music to which I can't stop listening (who can possibly choose just one artist/song?!?!):
Half Moon Run, Rock'n'Roll Life and Drug You
Shostakovich, Symphony No.8 and String Quartet No.8
Foals, Inhaler

9. Favorite type of cookie?
White chocolate chip

10. Favorite season and why?
Seeing as I am a temperate-weather type of girl, fall is my favorite season.  The aroma of fall just always beats the smell of summer's melting asphalt and spring's slopping mud.  My only problem with fall is the fact that it always seems to be shortest of the four seasons.

Get To Know Jaagrit!

Welcome to my questionairre, I was so excited to answer all these questions and educate you on my life. I hope you take away something about me from this if not then I hope you are entertained.  Alright, let's dive into it, shall we?!

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
Head of Social (aka Parties, aka fun, aka Miscellaneous, aka making announcements)

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I had so much time and I would find myself plugged to my ipad, laptop or T.V. all the time so I decided to unplug and live. I also made my own recipes.

3. Best fall meal?
There's no topping a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte!! Am I right? Am I right?!!
I am not right, because the answer is Pecan Pie. I don't care where its from, a pecan pie is never done wrong and even if it is for some reason even then it tastes good. Pecan Pie. @PecanPie. #PecanPie!

4. What color is your favorite shirt?
My Fox Chapel GLAX Rugby so guess what?
What?
Red and White.

5. Favorite writing utensil?
Any .5 lead mechanical pencil that stays in my grip.
I cannot deal with a pencil that slides up or down my hand while I am writing. As I write this newly found pet-peeve, I'm thinking about all the in-class essays that left my hands sweaty and cramped because I had the wrong pencil at the wrong time.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- Stieg Larsson. I do recommend it. Strongly.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
I think my slight ADHD doesn't let me think about one song for too long so there isn't one. Sad, I know, but the last song I heard was Runaway by Kanye West.

8. Favorite artist/song?
My favorite artist is Fernando Botero- Please Please look at his paintings, they make me laugh.
My favorite song is Watch Out for This (Bumaye) - Major Lazer.

9. Favorite type of cookie?
Dark Chocolate with White Cookie Chips. (eh ma lord)

Getting to Know the Tapestry Staff: Che Esch

Hey everyone! It's Che, here for my entry in Getting to Know the Tapestry Staff.

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
Manuscript Tutor, Grammarian, and (my most illustrious role) co-contributor to the Tapestry Word of the Week.

2. What is something adventurous you did over the summer?
I drove a car on public property for the first time! If that's not adventurous, I don't know what is.

3. What is your favorite fall meal?
Pumpkin roll.   ...That's a meal, right?

4. What color is your favorite shirt?
It's kind of a cross between sunset orange and pink. It looks a little bit better than it sounds.

5. What is your favorite writing utensil?
My mechanical pencil with an extendable eraser.

6. What is a book that you read over the summer? Do you recommend it?
I think everyone should read Pride and Prejudice. I don't usually go for love stories, but this one was really entertaining! It focuses a lot more on the social nuances of the situation rather than lovey-dovey stuff, so I found it more appealing than your average love story. Also, the way Jane Austen writes just cracks me up sometimes (I hope it's on purpose).

7. What is the song that's in your head right now?
Love Runs Out by One Republic

8. Favorite artist/song?
Uh..... pass? I honestly have no idea (substitute in the above answer if you must).

9. What is your favorite type of cookie?
My grandmother's chocolate chip cookies.

10. What is your favorite season and why?
Spring, because there is so much energy and excitement. Everyone is so ready for...er...something to ...uh...happen. I'd also like to take this time to recognize what a wonderful school we have, and how much we all appreciate the opportunities afforded to us by belonging to a community with an excellent public school system.

Okay, bye now.

Sarah Ssemakula here!

Co-editor in chief

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
I went to Malaysia to visit my relatives!  While I was there, I learned how to drive a motorcycle.

3. Best fall meal?
Oh. My. Gosh.  Definitely the KFC chicken bowl...mashed potatoes, chicken, cheese, corn, and GRAAAVY... it seriously can't get any better than that.

4. What color is your favorite shirt?
Blue, teal, orange, and yellow
It's a hawaiian shirt and the bright colors make me extremely happy.  I haven't worn it yet this year!  Maybe I'll wear it tomorrow...

5. Favorite writing utensil?
A mechanical pencil

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
AMERICANAH!  I read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over the weekend and it is my favorite book of the year.  I am so thankful that Nicole and Ms. Green recommended it to me.  I found out yesterday that Americanah is going to be a movie and Lupita Nyongo will be Ifemelu, the main character.  I'm sooo excited to see it.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
Mountains by Yuna

8. Favorite artist/song?
I can't pick one... recently I've been obsessing over Yuna, Of Montreal, and Childish Gambino.

9. Favorite type of cookie (PS this is an important one;)?
Chocolate chip...such a classic

10. Favorite season and why?
FALL because it's not hot!  I love wearing comfy sweaters, colorful tights, and stylish boots.

Xoxo, Sarah

Getting to Know the Tapestry Staff: Maria Burns

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a good Thursday. Here's a bit about me...

1. What position are you in the Tappy QRT?
Head of layout. That's means I'll be a hot mess during March.

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer?
My family went to Mackinaw, which is an island off of Michigan that doesn't have any motor vehicles. My dad and sister (Anna) and I biked around the island and decided to bike on a power line swath (packed dirt with large jagged rocks). Not with mountain bikes. It was... interesting.

3. Best fall meal?
Grilled cheese. But not just any grilled cheese. Either the heavenly one from Oh My Grill (Nina knows what I'm talking about) or my signature one. If you want to try it, here you go: Tuscany bread, provolone, lil dried basil, and very thinly sliced fresh apple. Plus apple cider. (Not on the sandwich, though.)

4. What color is your favorite shirt?
That means I need to have a favorite shirt... Hmmm...
Okay so I just surveyed my closet and I have declared a three-way tie between a teal one, a rust one, and an emerald green one (but like actually the color of an emerald, not that fake color that people call emerald).

5. Favorite writing utensil?
Quill. No, kidding. Probably just a nice inky pen.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it?
Jane Austen's Emma. Would recommend - if you can handle heroines that are clearly flawed.

7. The song that's in your head right now?
Kill the Director by The Wombats. It was just playing on 8tracks.

8. Favorite artist/song?
Do you have four hours for the list? Shortened version: Florence + the Machine, OneRepublic, Ingrid Michaelson, Daughter. Cosmic Love and Medicine

9. Favorite type of cookie (P.S. This is an important one)?
Nestle Toll House cookie DOUGH or snickerdoodles.

10. Favorite season and why?
F A L L. Leaves, sweaters, cool air warm sun, cinnamon / spices, jewel tone fashion (yaaasss). (Also I read Jane Eyre in November so I look forward to that).

Have a great evening!
- Maria

Getting To Know The Tapestry Staff: Emily F.

Hey Tappy Staff!

Emily F here! I hope everyone has had a great first couple of days in school. Feel free to elaborate on your answers, mix up questions, or just write about something that will help us get to know you!

2. Something adventurous you did over the summer? I passed my drivers license test after the 5th try. (I could parallel park in my sleep after that adventure).

4. What color is your favorite shirt? Maroon/Red (It's a sweater... this September heat is holding me back from wearing it).

5. Favorite writing utensil? A ballpoint pen- it's makes your handwriting look so effortless.

6. A book that you read over the summer; do you recommend it? Looking For Alaska by John Green, I absolutely recommend it (as well as all of his other books).

7. The song that's in your head right now? Take You Home by Thomas Rhett (I saw him in concert over the weekend and he is fabulous).

8. Favorite artist/song? My favorite artists are Tay Swift and John Mayer and my favorite song is (at the moment) Scenes From An Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel.

9. Favorite type of cookie (PS this is an important one;)? White chocolate chip or snickerdoodles!

10. Favorite season and why? Fall because of cranberry and cinnamon scented candles, crisp leaves, and cool autumn air. It is truly a magical season.
